For the meatballs:
– 1 lb ground beef (you can also use a combination of beef and pork)
– 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
– 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
– 1 egg
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 teaspoon dried oregano
– 1 teaspoon dried basil
– Salt and pepper to taste

For the marinara sauce:
– 2 (14 oz) cans crushed tomatoes
– 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
– 1 onion, finely chopped
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 teaspoon dried basil
– 1 teaspoon dried oregano
– 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
– Salt and pepper to taste

1. **Prepare the meatballs:** In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together until well combined.

2. Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. You should get around 20-24 meatballs, depending on the size.

3. **Brown the meatballs:** Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil. Once the oil is hot, add the meatballs in batches and brown them on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. This step is optional but adds flavor to the meatballs.

4. **Prepare the marinara sauce:** In the slow cooker, combine the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, chopped onion, minced garlic, dried basil, dried oregano, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Stir everything together until well combined.

5. **Add the meatballs:** Carefully place the browned meatballs into the slow cooker, making sure they are submerged in the marinara sauce.

6. **Cook:** Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, or until the meatballs are cooked through and tender.

7. **Serve:** Once the meatballs are cooked, you can serve them hot over cooked pasta, spaghetti squash, or with crusty bread. Garnish with additional grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh basil if desired. Enjoy your delicious slow cooker meatballs and marinara sauce!
