If you’re looking for a light and airy dessert, look no further than these vegan apple beignets. They are perfect for Fall and Winter months. These little bites will make your mouth water with the first bite of cinnamon-sugar crusted doughnut goodness!
These Vegan Apple Beignets are inspired from Dutch Appelflappen which are apple fries. I’ve seen them made several different ways and my version is below. They are easy peasy to make and are a delicious treat.
What are Beignets?
Beignet is a type of fritter, or deep-fried pastry and are very popular in New Orleans. These vegan apple beignets are not like the ones in NOLA but they are a fritter.
Can you make these not vegan?
Of course, you’d add butter and buttermilk or evaporated milk into the recipe but these are just as good without it.
How do you store them?
Make sure you drain any oil on them before you store them in a tight fit storage container.
How to make Vegan Apple Beignets
Inspired from the Dutch cuisine
Ingredients
- 3 large sweet apples (I used Gala apples)
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 cup carbonated water
- ¼ cup sugar
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- Frying oil (I used canola oil, but you can also use vegetable or sunflower oil)
Instructions
- Make the batter by mixing the flour, baking powder, salt, and carbonated water. It should have a thicker consistency. If it is too runny, add a little bit of flour. Mix until smooth.
- Peel and core the apples, then slice them as thick as you like.
- Heat up the oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
- Dip your apple slices through the batter and let the excess fall off the apple slice.
- Once your oil has reached 350 degrees, you fry each apple slice until golden brown. Circa 3-5 minutes.
- Make your cinnamon sugar by mixing the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
- Dip the fried apple beignets in the cinnamon sugar and serve warm.
These vegan apple beignets are a delicious take on the classic New Orleans favorite. They’re perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even dessert!
